The Beginner's Guide to Strength Training at Hometown Fitness
Walking into a weight room for the first time can feel intimidating. But here's the truth: everyone in that gym was a beginner once. And strength training is one of the best things you can do for your body at any age.
This guide will get you started — no experience required.
Why Strength Training?
- Burns fat long after your workout — muscle burns more calories at rest than fat
- Builds bone density — critical as we age
- Improves posture and reduces back pain
- Boosts confidence in every area of life
The Big 5 Movements to Learn First
Forget the complicated machines to start. Focus on these five foundational movements:
- Squat — Works your entire lower body
- Deadlift — Builds posterior chain strength (glutes, hamstrings, back)
- Bench Press — Chest, shoulders, and triceps
- Overhead Press — Shoulders and upper body
- Row — Back thickness and posture correction
Master these before anything else.
A Simple 3-Day Beginner Program
Day A:
- Squat: 3 sets × 5 reps
- Bench Press: 3 sets × 5 reps
- Barbell Row: 3 sets × 5 reps
Day B:
- Squat: 3 sets × 5 reps
- Overhead Press: 3 sets × 5 reps
- Deadlift: 1 set × 5 reps
Alternate A and B three times per week. Add a small amount of weight each session.
Tips for Success
- Start lighter than you think you need to. Form matters more than weight.
- Rest 3 minutes between heavy sets. Don't rush.
- Track your workouts. A simple notebook or your phone works fine.
- Be consistent over intense. Three moderate sessions per week beats one brutal session.
