Eating to Support Your Gym Goals: Simple Nutrition for Real People

Eating to Support Your Gym Goals: Simple Nutrition for Real People

You can't out-train a bad diet — it's one of the most repeated sayings in fitness, and it's largely true. But that doesn't mean you need to weigh every gram of food or give up everything you enjoy.

Here are the principles that actually matter.

Protein is Your Priority

Protein builds and repairs muscle. If you're training, you need more of it than the average person.

Aim for: 0.7–1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day.

Good sources:

  • Chicken, turkey, beef, fish
  • Eggs and Greek yogurt
  • Cottage cheese
  • Protein powder (a convenient supplement, not a requirement)

Don't Fear Carbohydrates

Carbs are your body's preferred fuel source for exercise. Cutting them drastically while training hard leads to fatigue, poor performance, and lost muscle.

Focus on quality carbs: rice, oats, potatoes, fruit, and whole grains. Time them around your workouts for best results.

Stay Hydrated

Even mild dehydration reduces strength and endurance. Aim for at least half your body weight in ounces of water per day — more on training days.

Calories Still Count

  • Want to lose fat? Eat slightly less than you burn.
  • Want to gain muscle? Eat slightly more.
  • Want to maintain? Match your intake to your expenditure.

You don't need to track obsessively — but having a general sense of your intake is helpful.

What to Eat Before and After a Workout

Pre-workout (1–2 hours before): A meal or snack with carbs and some protein. Oatmeal with eggs, a banana with peanut butter, or rice and chicken all work well.

Post-workout (within 1–2 hours): Protein and carbs to kickstart recovery. A protein shake with a piece of fruit, or a chicken and rice bowl.

Keep It Simple

The best diet is one you can stick to. Don't try to overhaul everything at once. Pick one habit to improve this week — maybe it's adding a protein source to every meal — and build from there.

Consistency in the gym combined with consistent, sensible eating is all you need.
